The wide range of mobile applications in the app store has made our lives so easier. For every particular service or task, we have two or more options available. But, with the increasing facilities, the risks to the user security are also increasing. Recently, the Google found that there are hundreds of android applications in the Google play store that uses ultrasonic sound waves to spy on user and gain personal information without the user’s knowledge. According to the researchers such android applications are using ultrasound waves instead of GPS to trace the current location of the user. Also, these sound waves are being tracked using the microphone of the user’s smartphone so as to get a complete knowledge of his/her interests. This information is then used to provide related advertisements to the user and earn high revenue through advertisements.
While investigating, the experts have also found that various android application development are equipped with tracking softwares that traces user’s current location and even spy on the TV viewing. The researchers have also found that many applications are linking various mobile devices of the same user together to get an access to more relevant information and even listening to the activities in background, without asking for any kind of permission from the user or acknowledge him/her regarding the same. And the most surprising thing is that the code used in such privacy threatening apps, according to the experts, is the one developed for large brands like McDonald’s and Krispy Krene. Though the Apple applications are also under the suspect of the same, but it has been found that android apps are more into this private information stealing process as android devices are easier to target. The reason behind this is that the security measures of the android devices are fragmented and differ from brand to brand. Moreover, just 4.9% of Android devices run with the ‘state-of-the-art’ protective software. The research team has concluded that nearly 234 android applications including ShopKick app are monitoring the user’s location and interests so as to show them related advertisements. Not just the retail apps, the games apps like Pino Henyo are also playing with sensitive information of the users. To deal with this situation, Google has banned such android applications and asked the android app developers to update their applications as per the privacy policies. Also, it has been made compulsory for the android as well as iOS applications to ask for user's permission before using inaudible ultrasound waves or any such technology, even when it is meant for providing a personalized experience to the user.
